The St. Louis Zoo is one of the best zoos in the country with over 11,000 animals and many natural habitat exhibits. The history of the Zoo began with the acquisition of the 1904 World's Fair Flight Cage which is still in use today. In 1913, the city of St. Louis set aside 77 acres within Forest Park for a zoo, along with state legislation that stated that "the zoo shall be forever free". And general admission to the zoo is still free!
The Children's Zoo, the Zooline Railroad, the Conservation Carousel, the Sea Lion Show and others are special attractions at the Zoo. Special events at the Zoo include "Boo at the Zoo," a family friendly Halloween events held during the month of October and "Wild Lights," a holiday lights display during special evening hours during the month of December. These attractions and events charge a fee.
The St. Louis Zoo is open every day except Christmas and New Years, from 9am to 5pm. Summer hours may be longer. Memberships to the St. Louis Zoo are available with benefits such as free parking, reciprocal zoo entry around the nation, tickets to special events and passes to paid attractions within the Zoo.
